Hands-free coding

Keep coding agents moving while your eyes are elsewhere.

Heard turns agent progress, questions, blockers, tests, and results into concise spoken updates. On Power, dictate a reply and route it back to the right session.

(1) The short answer

Hands-free coding is supervision by exception, not coding without oversight.

The useful version of hands-free agent work is simple: the agent continues independently, Heard speaks when something material changes, and you return when judgment is required. You are not handing over responsibility; you are removing repetitive visual checking.

Co-pilot gives short updates while you are at the screen, Companion gives fuller narration when you step away, and Focus stays quiet until an agent needs you: questions, approvals, blockers, and failures. The right mode depends on how far you are from the screen and how risky the task is.

Less tab checking

Hear state changes instead of reopening every terminal on a timer.

Faster interventions

Questions and failed checks reach you when they happen.

Clear ownership

Session context helps you answer the agent that actually needs you.

(2)The workflow

Step away without losing the thread.

Start the agent as usual, confirm Heard is following the session, and choose a listening mode. Routine tool calls can be compressed while questions, approvals, test failures, and final results remain prominent.

This works well for builds, test suites, dependency upgrades, refactors, and other runs where continuous screen attention adds little value but timely decisions still matter.

(3)Guardrails

Use voice as a signal, not as proof.

A spoken summary is a fast operational layer. It does not replace reviewing diffs, logs, test evidence, security-sensitive changes, or deployment output before accepting work.

  • Stay at the screen for destructive or production-changing operations.
  • Require tests and explicit verification in the agent prompt.
  • Review the actual code before merge, even when the narrated result sounds complete.
(4)Talk back

Answer the decision without reconstructing the session.

On Heard Power, dictate a response from the Mac app or paired iPhone. Heard routes the reply to the selected session, so a short clarification does not turn into a hunt through windows.

How it works

A safer eyes-off loop

  1. Define the task and checks

Tell the agent the scope, constraints, and evidence required before it begins.

  2. Choose a listening mode

Use Co-pilot at the screen, Companion for fuller narration away from it, or Focus when only intervention points matter.

  3. Respond to exceptions

Return for approvals, blockers, failures, and final review instead of polling the terminal.

Hands-free coding

Questions, answered.

Does hands-free coding mean I can ignore the agent?

No. Heard reduces routine visual monitoring. You still define the task, handle risky decisions, inspect the diff, and verify the result.

Can Heard speak only when something goes wrong?

Yes. Focus mode stays quiet until an agent needs you: questions, approvals, blockers, and failures. Routine progress and normal final results stay quiet.

Can I reply from my phone?

Yes. Heard Power lets you pair your iPhone with the Heard companion app to listen live and talk back. The Mac remains the host for the coding sessions.
